1) Open a new file 12 x 12 inches, 300 dpi with a transparent background.

2) Change the foreground color chip to a shade of brown. Set the background to a darker shade of brown. (Shades used for tutorial were 7d6a47 and 4a3715).

|
3) Using the Rectangle Tool, draw out a shape. Rasterize the layer. (Layer>Rasterize>>Layer)
4) Copy the shape. (Ctrl (Cmd) J)
5) Select the copied shape by Ctrl (Cmd) clicking the picture of the shape in the Layers Palette.

6) Contract the selection by 30 pixels: Select>Modify>>Contract>>>30.
|
|
|
7) Delete the selected area. (Press the Del Key) Rename the layer Edge. |
|
|
8) Select the Shape 1 Layer. Click the layer effects icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Add the following layer effects: |

|
9) Also add Bevel and Emboss and Gradient Layer Styles. |
|
|
10) Copy the Layer Style to the Edge Layer. (With the cursor over the Layer Style area on
the Shape 1 Layer, right click. Choose Copy Layer Style option. Right Click on Edge Layer, choose Paste Layer Option OR
while holding down the Alt key, drag the fx from the Shape 1 layer to the Edge Layer.
11) Turn of the visibility of the Shape 1 Layer. Make sure the lighter shade of brown is the Foreground color and then
type the text you want on your plaque. Use a font like Times New Roman and all caps. Adjust the spacing of the letters
unevenly through the Horizontal Scale. When you are finished Rasterize the Type Layer. (Layer>Rasterize>>Type).
Turn on the visibility of the Shape 1 and add Layer Style to the Rasterized Type Layer . Play with the Layer Style
settings until you are happy with the look. I added a small Drop Shadow, Bevel and Inner Glow.

12) Your plaque should look now look like this. |

13) Using the Ellipse Tool draw out a small circle in one of the corners of the plaque. Copy the Layer Style from the Shape 1 to the circle. Copy the circle 3 times and move into position on the plaque.
14) You are now ready to add grunge and character to your plaque and typing. Add a new layer just above the Shape 1 layer. Change your Color Chips to Gray Green and Gray colors. (6b7c7e and b5b5aa). Using a rough bristly brush paint in grunge around edges and under letters. Play with layer blend modes and opacity until you get a grunge layer you are happy with. |

15) Almost finished. To add even more realism, use the dodge and burn tool on the Shape 1, Edge, Grunge and Type Layers. You have now finished a digital scrapbook kit element! |
