1) Open a new file 12 x 12 inches, 300 dpi with a transparent background.

2) Change the foreground color chip to a shade of brown. Set the background to a darker shade of brown. (Shades used for tutorial were 7d6a47 and 4a3715).

3) Using the Rectangle Tool, draw out a shape. Simplify the shape (Click the Simplify button)
4) Copy the shape. (Ctrl (Cmd) J)
5) Select the copied shape by Ctrl (Cmd) clicking the picture of the shape in the Layers Palette.

6) Contract the selection by 150 pixels: Select>Modify>>Contract>>>100. Then Select>Modify>>Contract>>>50.(You can only contract a maximum of 100 pixels at a time so perform the contraction twice.)

7) Delete the selected area. (Press the Del Key) Rename the layer Edge. Deselect (Ctrl (Cmd) D) |

8) Select the Edge Layer. Select the Layer Styles Palette (Artwork and Effects>Special Effects>>Layer Styles>>>Drop Shadows.) Double Click on the Low to
add shadow. Double Click on the Style Icon on the Edge Layer to open the Style Settings. Adjust the properties of the Drop Shadow, Glow and Bevel as in the picture. (Note Inner Glow color has been changed to the foreground color. Double Click on the color chip and click the eyedropper tool on the foreground color chip). |

9) Create a New Layer above the Shape 1 Layer. Select the Gradient Tool. From Options Bar select Foreground to Background. Select Reflected (4th Button). Holding down the Ctrl (Cmd) Click the picture of Shape 1 to get a selection. Draw a gradient by clicking out side the selection area and dragging down just past the middle of the shape. |

10)Delete the Shape 1 Layer. Holding down the Ctrl (Cmd) Click the picture of Edge to get a selection. Select Layer 1. Ctrl (Cmd) J to create a copy of Layer 1. Drag new layer above Edge Layer. Group Layer 2 with Edge. (Hold down the Alt (Option) Key and click on the line between the 2 layers)

11) Turn off the visibility of the Layer 1. Make sure the lighter shade of brown is the Foreground color and then
type the text you want on your plaque. Use a font like Times New Roman and all caps. When you are finished, Right Click on the Text layer and choose the Simplify Layer option.
Turn on the visibility of the Layer 1 and add Layer Style to the Type Layer . Play with the Layer Style
settings until you are happy with the look. I added a small Drop Shadow, Bevel and Inner Glow.

12) Using the Ellipse Tool draw out a small circle in one of the corners of the plaque. Copy the Layer Style from the Edge Layer to the circle.(Hold down the Alt (Option) key and drag the Style Icon to the Shape 1 Layer. Both layers should now have a style icon.) Copy the circle 3 times (Ctrl (Cmd) J) and move into position on the plaque.
14) You are now ready to add grunge and character to your plaque and typing. Add a new layer just above the Layer 1. Change your Color Chips to Gray Green and Gray colors. (6b7c7e and b5b5aa). Using a rough bristly brush paint in grunge around edges and under letters. Play with layer blend modes and opacity until you get a grunge layer you are happy with. |

13) Almost finished. To add even more realism, use the dodge and burn tool on the Shape 1, Edge, Grunge and Type Layers. You have finished a great looking digital scrapbook kit element! |
