Computer Scrapbooking. Create Plaid Digital Scrapbook Paper
Adobe PhotoShop Tutorial

It is easy to make a collection of plaid patterns that you can use in computer scrapbooking as digital scrapbook papers.

Choose 2 colors you want to use in your plaid. Have the background color for your plaid set as the background color.

Open a new document. The size should be the size you want one square of your plaid to be. For this tutorial, I chose 1in x1in or 300 pixels by 300 pixels. The resolution should be 300.

With the Rectangle Tool, draw a rectangle along the left edge of the canvas. Change the blend mode to Multiply. Duplicate the rectangle layer (Ctrl J). Select Edit-Transform-Rotate 90 CW and move the strip to the top of the canvas.

Continue to create rectangles to fill the square canvas. Use other colors if desired. Insure that the rectangles are aligned evenly so that your finished plaid will look good.

Define the pattern. Edit-define pattern. In the box that opens, name pattern if desired. I called this one Orange/purple.

Open a new document the size you want your paper to be. I opened a document 3600 x 3600 pixels at resolution 300. Then choose Edit-Fill. When the Fill box pops up choose pattern. The pattern you just defined will be the last pattern.

Click on the pattern and your canvas will fill with the plaid pattern.

There are many different variations of plaid so experiment. Below is another example I made.

Saving Your Patterns

After you have made a few plaids you can save the patterns so that you can use them again and again to make computer scrapbooking papers. Go to edit, select preset manager. In the Preset Type drop down box select Pattern.

Select the patterns you want to save together, either by Ctrl clicking on each pattern or if the patterns are in a row click on the first and shift click on the last.
Choose Save Set, name your patterns and save. You should save in the c:/Program Files/Adobe/Your version of Photoshop (eg Adobe Photoshop CS3)/Presets/Patterns. You should also save in another spot in case you have to re-install your program.
To use, load the patterns by: Edit-Preset manager-Preset type:Patterns-load. Select your saved pattern file.
